Apple just launched the new Apple Watch weeks ago and Apple fans can't wait to explore the new design and updated features of Apple's another watch invention. Design
When the Apple Watch was released in April 2015, it offered only one set of internal features — call it "Series 0". In September 2016, Apple announced two new feature variations, called Series 1 and Series 2, respectively. In September 2017, there are three distinct Series options available for users: the existing Series 1, Series 3 GPS-only, and Series 3 GPS + Cellular.
Until Apple Watch 4 and 5, the watch series has been very similar in terms of design, Apple Watch 4 and 5 mark the first 40mm or 44mm size variants. This allows for a slightly larger screen and the digital crown.
Little reminder: Only Apple Watch 2 and Apple Watch 3 are waterproof, so do not wear the latest Apple Watch 4 to the swimming pool! Apple Watch Series 1 is only splash-resistant while Apple Watch Series 3 options are water-resistant up to 50 meters, so you can take them swimming or wear them in the shower.
Performance - Features
All versions of Apple Watch features a heart rate monitor, accelerometer, gyroscope and ambient light sensor. The Apple Watch 3 was the first that supported an Altimeter while the Apple Watch 4 has ECG features for the first time. Comparing to Apple Watch 3, the new ECG feature is mostly likely the major upgrade of Apple Watch 4.
Each watch has featured 512MB of RAM, apart from Apple Watch 3 which features 768MB. The official details of Apple Watch 4 have not yet been released by Apple. I guess the most obvious difference must be the screen size and display.
Comparing to Apple Watch 1 and 2, Apple Watch Series 3 reached the upgrade milestone: It is enhanced with swim-proofing and a direct-fire speaker, GPS and run-tracking, a twice-as-bright Retina display, along with a new S3 dual-core processor that's 1.7x faster than the Series 1's S1P. Performance - Screen Display
The Apple Watch Series 4 has a much larger display with rounded edges, making full use of the space available and resulting in a bolder design. The 40mm Series 4 offers a 759sqmm display area compared to the 563sqmm on the 38mm Series 3.
The Apple Watch Series 4 offers a much bigger display that makes better use of the case size, an improved accelerometer, fall detection, Bluetooth 5.0 and an electrical heart sensor, which will eventually allow users to measure their own ECG (US/UK/Europe-only for now).
Performance - Speed
The big spec upgrade on the Apple Watch 2 is the S2 dual-core processor inside. For Apple Watch 3, we were still subjected to a spinning icon when trying to enter some apps although Apple said they already upgraded the processor.
The Apple Watch Series 4 has an upgraded processor that is claimed to be two times faster than the S3, called the S4. It also has the next generation wireless chip called the W3. Many of the hardware features are the same as Series 3, including the barometric altimeter, built-in GPS and the optical heart rate sensor, but the Series 4 does add a few extras.
Specifications
